Communities
There are three main neighborhoods within : the modern Raleigh Court, the predominately Victorian area of the Old Southwest, and the South neighborhood with its established shade trees and Colonial-style architecture. Both South and the Old Southwest neighborhoods are historic districts. Memorial Hospital is in the South neighborhood, while Bluefield College and several neighborhood schools are located in the Old Southwest. The most modern of the region’s malls is in the Raleigh Court area.
The Farmer’s Market downtown dates back to the early 1700s. The market, itself, is the site of the annual Chili Cook-off competition, while the surrounding neighborhood is the arts and culture center of the city.
